Entries included activities for each day of the year spent either in St. Louis or travelling to New Orleans for their honeymoon and to New York. The pocket diary dates from 30 May 1851 to 22 February 1858. Most of the diary is written in German. English entries begin approximately 10 August 1856. One previous entry in English, approximately 9 August 1854, briefly describes the Know Nothing riot. Other diary entries discuss family and letters, weather, and social activities such as theatre performances and the Mechanical and Agricultural Fairs.
