George Schlossstein Diary
Scope and Contents
The pocket diary dates from 30 May 1851 to 22 February 1858. Most of the diary is written in German. English entries begin approximately 10 August 1856. One previous entry in English, approximately 9 August 1854, briefly describes the Know Nothing riot. Other diary entries discuss family and letters, weather, and social activities such as theatre performances and the Mechanical and Agricultural Fairs.

Biographical Sketch
George Schlossstein was born on 30 January 1832 to Johannes and Maria Friderike (Lauer) Schlossstein in Albisheim, Bavaria. He emigrated to America in 1851, living first in Cincinnati and then St. Louis. Shlossstein became a naturalized citizen on May 25, 1857. He married Mary Silberg in 1862 and had nine children. Shlossstein worked as a clerk before he entered the wholesale wine and liquor business in 1860 and established George Schlossstein and Co. George died on 20 January 1897 in St. Louis Missouri.
