The collection consists primarily of letters written to Ellen Magill from family and friends, which mostly discuss family and local news regarding Florissant, St. Louis, and Mexico, Missouri. The collection also contains correspondence relating to a cousin, Lucy Sullivan, whose account at St. Vincent’s Institution was paid for by Ellen and Jane Magill; receipts for items and money sent to St. Vincent’s Institution; and an account book from a Florissant grocery store, dated 1877.

John Mattingly Letter

Scope and Contents The letter is written by slave dealer John Mattingly of St. Louis to Mr. Goode (location unknown) and is dated July 12, 1856. Mattingly planned to purchase a girl from Mr. Goode. He wrote in reply to Goode’s letter of July 11th to arrange a time for them to meet as Mattingly planned to travel to Kentucky in one week. The Bud Mattox Native American Artifacts Photograph Collection contains four photographs documenting Wilbur Louis “Bud” Mattox's collection of prehistoric Native American artifacts. During the 1940s-1960s, Mattox amassed an important and influential collection of artifacts from the Lower Meramec River Valley Region. The photographs show Mattox's displays of stone axes, arrowheads, and other artifacts. Two of the photographs show two men examining the collection.
