Lesbians in Positive Sync Collection

 Collection
Identifier: P1308

Scope and Contents

The Lesbians in Positive Sync (LIPS) collection documents a planning retreat held by the leadership of LIPS, probably in 1998. LIPS leadership consisted of four black women and four white women, and all eight women were present at the retreat. These women included Angel Saddler, Cheryl Throgmorton, Deke Law, Deb Holmes, and Susan Nanny. Also present was a paid facilitator, Mary Ferguson. The retreat was held at the resort community of Innsbrook, Missouri in Warren County. The goal of the retreat was for LIPS leaders to develop a strategic plan. They had held at least one dance prior to the retreat and would hold others afterward.

The photos mostly consist of candid shots of the members of the group participating in brainstorming sessions, cooking and eating, and casually socializing. There are also posed shots of several members of the group.

Biographical / Historical

Lesbians in Positive Sync (usually known by the acronym LIPS) was a St. Louis-based organization in operation from about 1997 to 1999. The group sought to diminish the racial divide in St. Louis's lesbian community and produced deliberately racially integrated dance events.

St. Louis's LGBTQIA+ communities have often reflected the racial segregation of the larger community. Since at least the 1930s, there was generally a clear differentiation between predominantly black and predominantly white lesbian and gay bars and nightclubs. Several earlier groups that produced entertainment events and dances for local lesbians, such as Red Tomatoe and Wired Women, drew largely white crowds and had almost entirely white leadership for most of their history.

The leadership of LIPS was deliberately integrated, with the formal leaders consisting of four black women and four white women. These women included donor Deborah "Deb" Holmes; Holmes' romantic partner, Susan Nanny; Angel Saddler; Cheryl Throgmorton; and Deke Law. "Our objective was to racially integrate the lesbian community," according to Holmes.

What appears to be a draft mission statement is written in marker on a paper flip chart in one of the photos. It reads: "LIPS is committed to social change. We will create thru leadership and collaboration. We will create welcoming environments that promote relationship and community building across perceived divisional boundaries."

According Holmes, LIPS held about three or four dances over its years in operation, including one at the Casa Loma Ballroom. The group's events were mostly advertised by word of mouth and e-mail. Holmes estimated that about 100 people attended most of the dances, with a larger number attending the one held at the Casa Loma. Alcohol was served at the events. Despite some objections, the group's leadership chose to make their events open to all ages in order to give young people a space to socialize. The group hired DJs (generally black women) to provide the music.

Deb Holmes was an educator, and Susan Nanny was an Episcopal priest and rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in the Central West End neighborhood of St. Louis. Holmes and Nanny raised two African American sons, and they attempted to cultivate a racially mixed social circle. Planning meetings for LIPS were often held in Holmes and Nanny's home.
