Letter signed Flora Byrne, Saint Louis, to [Mrs. Mayer, Franklin Street, Baltimore, Maryland]. Thanks her for kindness to daughter Annie. The little I have seen of this city disposes me to like it as a western residence. “You would be surprised at the success with which music is cultivated here.” Baltimore cannot boast of such a fine violinist as Mr. Fallon or so exquisite a flute as Mr. Carriere’s. “The people are by no means hospitable.” They distrust strangers and even pay no attention to letters of introduction. Mrs. Major Lee lives here in great style. She called on me six weeks ago. Mrs. Hoffman is my most agreeable acquaintance. Sends copy of note she had just received from her. Expect to leave here in March, go to the cabin, and make preparations for the garden, etc., and see you by April 20th. Note in pencil on back to Mary from Eliza C. Mayer stating she sends Flora’s letter for her to read. Individuals mentioned include Eliza, Flora, Mary, Annie, Charley, Mr. Fallon, Mr. Carriere, Mr. Mayer, Mrs. Major Lee, Mrs. Dr. Hoffman, Mrs. Rhodes, Mrs. Elliot, Madame Cauderbeck, Madame Trefonti, Mr. Read, and Edmond. Places mentioned include Baltimore and St. Louis. (4 pages), 1840 Feb 6

Letter signed Flora Byrne, Saint Louis, to My dear Eliza [Mrs. Eliza Mayer, Franklin Street, Baltimore]. I have learned that you are complaining of a sore eye. Be careful during March and do not expose yourself to the winds. Feel deeply for Mary in the loss of her mother. I dislike living here in a hotel. I have scarcely seen St. Louis, but my circle of acquaintances is increasing. Mrs. D. Hoffman is one of my friends. Sends one of her poems about a lady boarder. Individuals mentioned include Dr. Laidley Hoffman, Mr. Stickney, Flora, Father, Madame Trefonti, Madame Cauderbeck, Aunt Flora, Mother, Mary [Spear], William Spear, and Mrs. Marriott. Places mentioned include Baltimore, St. Louis, London, Paris, and America. (4 pages), 1840 Feb 23

Letter signed Flora Byrne, Byrnham Wood, to My dear Boys [Mrs. Mayer, Franklin Street, Baltimore, Maryland]. I feel that occasionally you boys must have something more tangible than news of my health and I do not want you to forget that there is somebody in the west who is deeply interested in your advancement. I wish you, Frank, could draw me a pretty Gothic structure and I’d give you your 7% in butter and cream. Tells Charley about little pony, Kate, who would take him over prairie for long rides. Also mentions Lewis and Alfred. Individuals mentioned include Mother, Charley, Mr. Fletcher, Dr. Byrne, Lewis, Alfred, Kate, Annie, Margaret, Lapsly, Nancy, Audumtla, Blossom, Cherry, Fair Star, Pink, James, and Frank. Letter signed Flora C. Byrne, Byrnham Wood, to My dear Aunt Flora [Mrs. Charles F. Mayer, Franklin Street, Baltimore, Maryland]. Very sorry that you had not been paid but feel you will get it soon as Mr. Mayer should get money from John Wyse. We have been without a dollar all winter but we raise everything on the farm and so want nothing. I would like my grandmother’s miniature from my mother’s trunk. Hopes that Eliza’s child will be a girl. I wish Henry had selected St. Louis rather than Buffalo. Individuals mentioned include Eliza, Bonaparte, Issac, Benjamin, Henry, Mr. Skinner, Edmond, and John Wyse. Place mentioned include Baltimore, Pikesville, St. Louis, and Buffalo. Letter signed Flora C. Byrne, Byrnham Wood, to My dear Eliza [Mrs. Charles F. Mayer, Franklin Street, Baltimore, Maryland]. We have had little winter this season. Harriet presented us with a little man servant and I christened him Alexander. Lucy is going to marry one of our negro men, Billy. It will mean that we must build another cabin. I enclose a notice about our Christmas dinner from a paper published in Paris, fifty miles away. Wishes Aunt Flora were safely here. Hopes Mrs. Saunders does not wait until July because Ohio will not be safe on account of low water and sickness. Individuals mentioned include Mary Spear, Aunt Flora, William Clendinen, Shepherdass, Edmond, Mrs. Saunders, Annie, Mr. Fletcher, Frank, Mary Brantz, Mr. Burnap, Lucy, Bill, Mr. Abernathy, Harriet, and Alexander. Places mentioned include Ohio [River], Paris, and Monroe County. (4 pages), 1844 Feb 3

Letter signed Flora Byrne, Byrnham Wood, to [Mrs. Mayer, Franklin Street, Baltimore, Maryland]. Sorry to hear of death of old Mrs. Mayer but I did not think she would long survive her husband. Just today a week we laid our Lizzie in her grave. Annie has been gravely ill and now Edmond seems also to be coming down with the measles. Edmond has no faith in country doctors and has given me directions as to the medicine to give him if he is too ill to direct me himself. So the whole responsibility rests on me. I thought my letters would be lively ones I would tell you of my arrangements but as yet the only regular thing I have established is family prayers. Individuals mentioned include Mr. Mayer, Mary Mayer, Eliza, Edmond, James, Margaret, Annie, Mr. Elliot, Poors, Mary Spear, Aunt Flora, Mrs. Mayer, and Jenkins. Places mentioned include Baltimore and Mexico. (4 pages), [1844] Feb 16
