Biographical / Historical
The Louisiana Purchase Exposition, or 1904 World’s Fair, officially opened in St. Louis on April 30, 1904 and an estimated 250,000 people visited on the first day. Music was an integral part of the fair, with three ‘official’ compositions published by fair organizers. Those three songs, “Along the Plaza,” “Hymn of the West,” and “Louisiana March,” were published locally by the Thiebes-Stierlin Music Company. However, those three songs only represent a fraction of the songs published in the years surrounding the Fair. Songs were written and published by local and national composers across genres. Some composers, such as Henry Kimball Hadley and John Knowles Paine were nationally known for their talent in the classical music world. While others, such as Scott Joplin, Kerry Mills, and Tom Turpin, were highly regarded for their talent as ragtime composers. Many of the covers feature vivid illustrations of attractions within the fairgrounds and along The Pike. There are also photographs of fair organizers, local politicians, and musical performers. This collection showcases the extent to which the Louisiana Purchase Exposition served as inspiration for composers across the United States.
