Copy of letter of John T. Mason, St. Louis, to Miss Emily V. Mason, Detroit, Michigan. Describes visit to St. Louis. The heat here is intense from the peculiar position of the city on limestone rock surrounded by open plains. It was the same thirty years ago when I visited it and “acknowledge it to be one of the hottest places of the same latitude on the continent.” It has, however, grown into a superb American city. I found myself in the midst of old acquaintances. Took Mrs. Strother out for the first time since the death of her husband. Visited my old friend and relation Major Graham. Description of Wisconsin, my assistance in surveying. At Helena I made a canoe, went down the Mississippi, and disposed of it 250 miles from Helena at the Upper Rapids. I hired on board the Steamer Illinois at $20 a month, came on to St. Louis. An exploring party of 25 men will leave St. Louis for the west in the spring and I may go. If you wish, I will return home and live on the farm, but I will make no acknowledgement nor will I pay one cent.
