Copy of letter of John T. Mason, St. Louis, to Miss Emily V. Mason, Detroit, Michigan. Describes visit to St. Louis. The heat here is intense from the peculiar position of the city on limestone rock surrounded by open plains. It was the same thirty years ago when I visited it and “acknowledge it to be one of the hottest places of the same latitude on the continent.” It has, however, grown into a superb American city. I found myself in the midst of old acquaintances. Took Mrs. Strother out for the first time since the death of her husband. Visited my old friend and relation Major Graham. I am also going to visit the Iron Mountain country with Mr. Pratt. Individuals mentioned: Kitty, Nugent, Sally, Mrs. Chouteau, General Gratiot, Emily, Mrs. Bainbridge, and Miss Sanford. Places mentioned: Chicago, Florida, Louisville, Cincinnati, New York, and Orleans. [Original in Detroit Public Library, Burton Collection.], 1841 June 1
