Letter signed J.E. Foster, St. Louis, to Jonathan Foster, West Boxford, Mass. I got your letter of March 12 and the reason you have not heard from me is because I have not written. Description of Wisconsin, my assistance in surveying. At Helena I made a canoe, went down the Mississippi, and disposed of it 250 miles from Helena at the Upper Rapids. I hired on board the Steamer Illinois at $20 a month, came on to St. Louis. An exploring party of 25 men will leave St. Louis for the west in the spring and I may go. If you wish, I will return home and live on the farm, but I will make no acknowledgement nor will I pay one cent.
