Letter signed Reuben Lewis, 3 Forks of the Missouri, to His Excellency Meriwether Lewis, governor of the Territory of Louisiana. He has written General Clark on the subject of their situation with trade and prospects in this country. “The heterogenious particles of which our Company are formed, some French, some Spaniards, some Americans, some Gentlemen . . ., some men hired, & some upon shares altogether forms such different interest and opinions that I fear we shall not do so well as we . . . should.” He believes the situation between the Blackfeet and the British makes the Columbia the best prospect but they should sell out if the prospects of the company do not get better by June. Mr. Champlain tells him that the martin abounds in the mountains dividing the waters of the Spanish River, or what is supposed to be the Rio del Nord. Beaver also abound but in areas of perpetual snow. He would like to get a copy of Meriwether’s travels through that country. (3 pages) (Date determined by a researcher, Fred R. Gowens, in 1989.), [1810] Apr 21
