Letter signed Meriwether Lewis, Chickasaw Bluffs, to James Madison, president of the United States. Alludes to the poor condition of his health and the fear of his papers falling into the hands of the British for which reason he changed his route to Washington and goes by land via Tennessee. (It was on this trip that Lewis died 11 October 1809.) (3 pages, original [first page torn] and transcript included), 1809 Sept 16
