This collection contains primarily music books that fall under the genre of opera. These books were collected by William N. Degenhart as he performed around the St. Louis area. Many of the pieces collected were composed by world famous artists like William Shakespeare, Richard Wagner, and Johann Strauss.

Biographical / Historical

Donated by Edward R. Degenhart, grandson of William N. Degenhart. William Degenhart was an enthusiastic vocalist, who sang for several decades in the Cathedral chorus and other groups. He was a noted bass. He was an avid member of the cast of Pagliacci stayed at the future Muny site in 1917, and the Shakespeare's As You Like It performed for the Tercentenary in 1916, also at the future Muny site. Degenhart was careful to get the Liberty Loan participation certificate in 1917, because as a person of German ancestry, he needed to proactively demonstrate his patriotism during World War I. William was born around 1866 and died January 15, 1939 in University City.
