The John Frey Collection contains photographs documenting the COVID-19 pandemic in St. Louis City and St. Louis County from March through July 2020. Photographs show empty store shelves as the region prepared for the virus, as well as business and park closures and residents at home during the stay-at-home orders. A protest against government-issued mask mandates and business restrictions is also documented. Photographs also show the changes to everyday life during the pandemic, such as socially distanced gatherings and celebrations; social distancing and mask policies in place at local businesses and institutions; and the collection and distribution of food and other necessities by food pantries. Of note are photographs showing local Black Lives Matter protests following the death of George Floyd, an African American man, after being pinned to the ground by a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 25, 2020.
