Kathlyn Wieland Collection

 Collection
Identifier: P1008

Scope and Contents

The Kathlyn Wieland Collection contains one scrapbook documenting Helen Penhall and her classmates at Bryan Mullanphy School and one photograph showing a 1913 confirmation class. The scrapbook and photograph do not appear to be related.

The scrapbook was created by Helen Penhall (1919-2007), and the cover is titled "Classmates and School Memories." The bulk of the material focuses on Helen's time at Bryan Mullanphy School, from which she graduated at the age of 15 in January 1935, but some material dates from Helen's time at Hadley Vocational School, from which she graduated in January 1939. It contains autographs and other notes, class pictures, newspaper clippings featuring friends and classmates, mementos, congratulatory cards, and graduation announcements for friends graduating from other local schools.

The confirmation class shows a group of boys and girls gathered around pastor and instructor Fred Hoffarth. The young people are identified on the back and the names are divided under headings labeled "German" and "English." The church and denomination are unknown. A note that appears to describe the 1910 census listing for Fred Hoffarth and family members in East St. Louis was originally stuck to the back of the print and remains in the folder.
