Lucy Rhinehart and Helen Montgomery Collection
Scope and Contents
The Lucy Rhinehart and Helen Montgomery Collection documents the USO careers of Rhinehart, who played the trumpet, and Montgomery, who played the drums. The women met while performing with the USO in Guam, and they became life partners, although they kept their relationship secret for most of their lives.
Photographs show snapshots of the two women and their fellow musicians on tour and performing, including Rhinehart’s bandmembers Velma Wunch, Jean Skinner, and Greta. Photographs also show portraits of the women in their military uniforms.
Several photographs show Montgomery prior to her USO career, and several post-USO portraits show Rhinehart and Montgomery posed with their instruments, possibly in connection to their performances under the band name the Lu-Wows. In addition, one portrait shows Montgomery bowling.

Biographical / Historical
Helen “Montee” Montgomery (1923-2005) was the daughter of Peter and Helen “Nellie” Irvine Montgomery, who immigrated to the United States from Scotland in 1920. The family settled in North Arlington, New Jersey, where Montgomery was born on April 22, 1923, before moving to Central Falls, Rhode Island. Lucy J. Rhinehart (1921-2014) was born on November 20, 1921 to Leonard P. and Ethel L. McWharf Rhinehart in Seneca Falls, N.Y.
Both Montgomery, who played the drums, and Rhinehart, who played the trumpet, joined the USO during WWII. They met while performing with the USO in Guam and became life partners, although they hid their relationship for most of their lives. They continued performing after the war, including under the name the Lu-Wows. Rhinehart occasionally appeared on Bob Hope’s overseas tours, and she later worked as a special education teacher in the Belleville School District.
The couple lived in New Baden, Illinois. Montgomery passed away on October 21, 2005, and she is buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in South St. Louis County. Rhinehart passed away on November 16, 2014, and she is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Jennings, Missouri.

Arrangement
This collection was assembled from two donations given by the same donor. The first donation (2015-161) focused on Lucy Rhinehart and her career in the USO. The second donation (2018-002) focused on Helen Montgomery and her career in the USO, in addition to several childhood and post-war photographs. There may also be select photographs of the other woman in each donation.
The donations are foldered separately, and the accession number is written on each folder. A color reproduction of a hand-colored photograph has been separated and is stored with color prints. An oversize photograph has also been separated and is stored with other oversize material. Several original hand-colored photographs are stored with the black and white prints.
