Scope and Contents

The R.J. Walker Photograph Collection contains 162 photographs documenting Walker’s World War I service with the 314th Engineer Regiment of the 89th Infantry Division and with the post-war occupation army in the German Rhineland. Many of the photographs were taken by Walker himself, and many have been printed as postcards. The photographs document training activities at Camp Funston in Kansas; construction of bridges and other activities of the 314th Engineers; war damage in Rheims and smaller towns in the French countryside; German towns and civilians post-war; General Pershing’s review of the 89th Division at Trier, Germany on April 23, 1919; and the 314th Engineers' trip home on the USS Montana.

Biographical / Historical

Robert John Walker was born on May 31, 1896 in St. Louis. He entered the US Army on September 20, 1917 as a private in Company 5, 164th Depot Brigade, 89th Division and was transferred to Company F, 314th Engineers, 89th Division on October 15, 1917. He was promoted to Corporal on September 1, 1918 and Sergeant First Class on May 1, 1919. His military service included the Lucey Sector from August 8 - September 11, 1918; the St. Mihiel Offensive from September 12 - 16, 1918; the Euyezen Sector from September 17 - October 7, 1918; the Meuse Argonne Offensive from October 19 to November 11, 1918; and the Army of Occupation from December 4, 1918 to May 10, 1919. Robert Walker died in 1973 in St. Louis.
