Letter signed E. Brown Hornor, St. Louis, to John S. Holloway, Philadelphia. Nothing can grieve me more than the account received from you of continued ill health. I have got my store under way but can form little idea of what may be done in the busy seasons as this is the dullest season they have known for many years. The human mind will always find excuses for its own backsliding, and having no one near to rest my affections upon, I am drawn without my own free will into society which ultimately may produce ruin to me and to my prospects. I shall endeavor to find out more in regard to LeRoy’s treatment., 1829 Feb 28

Letter signed E. Brown Hornor, St. Louis, to John S. Halloway, Philadelphia. Nothing more or less has occupied my mind than whether I should plunge myself in debt $2000 or give up all the prospects which induced me to come to this country. Now my soul always casts over my brow the dark mantle of melancholy--I have been the dupe of a hypocrite who wears the garb of religion to hide the pitchiness of his heart. We have had considerable sickness this season & many fine young men have been cut down., 1829 Aug 20

Letter signed E. Brown Hornor, St. Louis, to John S. Halloway, Philadelphia. Again I must burden your ears with my tales of ills with which it delighteth fate to strew my path. My affairs are formerly and my mind is much troubled how to get out of the difficulty which will completely swamp me unless I can find someone willing to join me in partnership who has a capital. Times are so dull here: no business, no excitement. Still, I am convinced that before long a change will take place. I was glad to see by your last letter that your health is better., 1829 Dec 13

Letter signed Joshua, St. Louis, to Mrs. Dorothy Belden. Every week people are leaving here to settle in the surrounding country but every day more Yankees come to spy out the land. We are planning on entering the auction and commission business and Col. Ely is ready to engage with us as soon as we find a store suitable. I do not regret coming here as the valley of the Mississippi is growing fast. The scepter of Dominion will soon pass from the East to the West. A resolution to establish Sunday schools in every settlement in this valley is fraught with greater consequences to the nation than any ever before adopted. Mr. Potts has just returned from Philadelphia and his statements were extremely interesting. Individuals mentioned: Mr. Hunt, Maj. Hopkins, Whittlevy, and Maso. Places mentioned: New York and W. Springfield., 1830 July 13
