Letter signed W.S. Burch, St. Louis, to Benjamin Burch. I have lost since last August $2000 in cash…Graves and myself started a drove of hogs from the upper country to this place in…Dec. the snow and freeze came on so that he could not proceed on his journey for Louis…The hogs declined Got lame and over laid till we lost upwards of $400 my best horse died…near half of my cattle died. We have settled 2 miles below St. Louis on the River at Judge Bent’s old place…the water seems not to agree with the family they have been puking and purging., 1831 May 2
