Letter signed Michel Amoureux, Ste. Genevieve, to Charles Gregoire, care of Jesse S. Duval & Company, Philadelphia. Mr. Bogy has probably given you details of the commerce in this country. There is an abundance of European merchandise in Atlantic ports. Everywhere there is a shortage of good woolens and hardware. Our citizens should be induced to turn more to raising sheep and manufacturing good strong woolens to meet the increase in the European population. I have no basis on which to make a satisfactory opinion on our War with England but hope daily for a general peace. I return your note on Mr. Samuel Anderson, which I was unable to collect. Explains circumstances of the note and information about the family, which may assist in the collection of the note. Names mentioned: Mrs. Samuel Anderson and Samuel Anderson Jr. Places mentioned: Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Canada, United States, France, Portugal, Spain, South America, Russia, and L'Orient, France. Letter of James S. Duval & Co., Philadelphia, to Charles Gregoire, Pittsburgh. They return the enclosed note, which was left with them. Mr. Samuel Anderson is still living. He was very much surprised that the note was unpaid and stated it had been paid by a Mr. Nesbit. They ask forgiveness for not taking any further steps in the case as they do not wish to annoy “this dignified old man and give him the impression that we doubt his assertion.” (1 page, in French with translation), 1813 Mar 3
