Norment discussed becoming aware of racism at an early age; the racial climate in Mississippi versus St. Louis; and how he met Arthur Shaw, William Clay, and William Archibald, all members of the NAACP. He could not afford the dues to become a NAACP member, but he attended youth council meetings and demonstrations. Norment explained that the NAACP knew about the youth demonstrations, served as advisors and held workshops, but it did not officially acknowledge the actions. He also began recruiting. Yvonne (Bonnie) Annette Rosen (1928- ): Biographical Information and Family History, Items from Rosen (4), Transcript (Tape 1/Side A, 9 pp.; Tape 1/Side B, 9 pp.; Tape 2/Side A, 12 pp.; Tape 2/Side B, 13 pp.; Tape 3/Side A, 4 pp.). She discussed CORE demonstrations, calling them undramatic and persistent, and a sense of tension within CORE regarding tactics, possibly a change brought on by growth. Norman R. Seay (1932-2019): Preliminary Meeting (6/15/04) Notes, Transcript (Tape 1/Side A, 11 pp.; Tape 1/Side B, 14 pp.; Tape 2/Side A, 13 pp.; Tape 2/Side B, 10 pp.). Seay participated in Intergroup Youth, an experimental high school program to promote cultural understanding, and was introduced to Maggie and Irv Dagen, co-founders of CORE. Billie Jean (Coil Ames) Teneau (1925- ): Interview Contact Sheet/Checklist, Biographical Information and Family History, Transcript (Tape 1/Side A, 14 pp.; Tape 1/Side B, 12 pp.; Tape 2/Side A, 14 pp.; Tape 2/Side B, 12 pp.; Tape 3/Side A, 4 pp.). Teneau married Joe Ames after graduating high school and both joined CORE while students at Washington University. Joe became more active with union Local 688, which had a good relationship with CORE. Teneau produced CORE’s newsletter and used her telephone to communicate with members. She told of her recent trip to France with Hostelling International. She recalled how CORE developed its model for action, including alerting the police to their activities; demonstrations in which she participated; having a cross burned in her yard; opening hotels/public accommodations; attending national conferences; briefly being executive director of national CORE; and the Christian Nationalist Crusade response to her move into Igoe housing and late night phone calls. Joy Ann (Busch) Walker (1943- ): Interview Contact Sheet/Checklist, Biographical Information and Family History, Vashon Yearbook photocopies (2), Interview Summary and Context, Index of Topics, Transcript (Tape 1/Side A, 11 pp.; Tape 1/Side B, 13 pp.; Tape 2/Side A, 6 pp.). Walker was born in a hospital in Kansas City; her mother could not go to a hospital in Independence due to segregation. She discussed St. Louis school desegregation in the mid-1950s. Walker served as president of the NAACP Youth Council while in high school. She explained the roles of Margaret Bush Wilson and Fredda Witherspoon; youth council structure, make-up, activities with adult supervision, and preparedness; and the St. Louis racial climate. Gloria Rahema Wrice (1945- ): Interview Contact Sheet/Checklist, Letter (8/18/04), Interview Summary and Context, Transcript (Tape 1/Side A, 12 pp.; Tape 1/Side B, 14 pp; Tape 2/Side A, 10 pp.; Tape 2/Side B, 5 pp.). Wrice joined the NAACP Youth Council at age 12. She recalled her great-grandmother, Betty Pollard, a dressmaker, being active in union demonstrations. Wrice recalled the racial climate in the 1960s; sit-ins at Bevo Mill; and structure, membership, and coaching of the council. She compared the NAACP of the 1960s to the present-day organization.
