Photocopy of letter of Elijah P. Lovejoy, St. Louis, to Rev. Absolom Peters, New York. Applying for another commission similar to former in American Home Missionary Society. Much religious indifference here – Des Peres folks engaged in building church; formation of Temperance Society at Manchester. The village, for its wickedness, has acquired the name Sodom. The Synod of Missouri have constituted a Com. of Missions (Brothers [Wm. S.] Potts, Hatfield, and myself with 2 elders]. We have voted to employ Brother [A.P.] Brown, a good but somewhat odd man.
