Scope and Contents

The collection contains family and business papers, estate papers, passports, and deeds of the families of Lemon Parker, William Russell, and James Russell (St. Louis, Washington County, and Franklin County, Mo.). Included are a travel journal of Lemon Parker, Sr.; land records from Howard County, Mo.; records relating to the firm of Ward & Parker and to the Galena Mining Company; and reminiscences of Anne Clendennin Russell (wife of Silas Bent Russell, son of Russella Russell Parker’s brother Charles Silas Russell) about St. Louis life from 1861-1947, written ca. 1947.

Biographical Sketch

George Ward Parker was born in Galena, Ill., on January 22, 1829, to Lemon Parker and Rebecca Knox Parker. After moving to St. Louis, he married Russella Lucy Russell (1835-1900), the daughter of Judge Joseph Russell and Lucy Bent Russell, on November 11, 1854. He was the founder of the Parker-Russell Mining and Manufacturing Company. After his death on March 30, 1899, his son, Lemon Parker (1857-1924), took over the family business. George Ward Parker and Russella Lucy Russell Parker are buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.

Donor Information

Ward S. Parker donated the typescript reminiscences of Anne Clendennin Russell (acc. no 58-0112) on October 30, 1958. On March 12, 1970, Parker granted permission to the Missouri Historical Society to photocopy selected letters from his philatelic collection. These items have been marked in the inventory as accession number 70-0017. Finally, on February 16, 1996, Parker donated photocopies of approximately 50 letters between himself and John Stephan regarding Parker-Russell family history. George W. Parker also donated family data on the Parker, Clendennin, and Hardeman families on May 31, 1957.
