Letter signed Samuel Hoit, Port Gibson, to Messrs. Ward & Parker, St. Louis. Under cover of your letter postmarked St. Louis, I received two notes against W.J. Redd of our town for collection. On the receipt of them I brought suit, one for Ward & Parker and one for Lemon Parker. He did not attend the trial but let judgment go against him by default. This day…he [could] appeal bonds in both cases to our next [St. Louis] Circuit Court, which will be held on the 3rd Monday of October next. It then becomes necessary that you employ an attorney to file a declaration or he may nonsuit you. I will recommend Josiah C. Smith, who is the very man to contend with Major Redd., 1828 June 12
