Scope and Contents

The Norman E. Horat Letters consist of letters to and from family members and friends of Norman and Jackie Horat and their mothers, Zoe McGee Horat Gill and Gertrude Marshall Black. Most of the letters were sent during World War II and the Korea War when Norman was in the navy. The letters from Norman Horat to his wife, Jackie, written during his time in the navy from 1944 to 1951, discuss his time in World War II at Camp Waldron in Farragut, Idaho, and at sea. Letters dated 1950-1951 discuss his time stationed in and near Japan during the Korean War. The letters from Jackie to her husband, Norman, dated 1944-1951, relate to her life in high school, life after their marriage, and life with their daughters and family. The letters from Norm Horat’s mother, Zoe, to her son and daughter-in-law are dated 1944 to 1964. These letters contain information regarding Zoe’s life in St. Louis; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her life in Murphysboro, Illinois; and trips to California. The letters from Norman Horat to his mother, Zoe, were written during his time in the navy during World War II and the Korean War. The 1944 letters reference Norman’s time at Camp Waldron in Farragut, Idaho, and on the USS Essex. A few letters were written by Norman as a civilian. The letters dated 1950-1951 contain information about Norman’s time on the USS Philippine Sea and in Japan. The last few letters are written from Jackie Horat to Zoe as they wait for Norman’s discharge from the navy. Letters from Gertrude Black to her daughter Jackie Clark Horat (1941-1978), who lived in St Louis with her aunt Laura Hofer. The letters describe Gertrude’s everyday life in Elsberry, Missouri. A few letters were sent to her from other people and family members. Letters and drawings from Eddie (Pete) and Mary Lou Black to their older sister Jackie Clark Horat, 1940s-1950s. Family letters to and from Jackie’s grandparents Buddy and Lulu Marshall describe everyday life. Letters from various family members related to Jackie Clark Horat and Norman Horat, 1945-2004, include information about the lives of these family members. Letters to Jackie Clark Horat from boyfriends Bill (and his friend Hoff), Lt. Samuel Davis, Lee Remick, and George, 1942-1945, describe their lives in high school and the service. Letters from Jackie’s friends, mostly from her friend Ruth, 1937-2000, describe their personal lives. Letters to Norman Horat from friends, 1944-1996, contain information about the writers’ lives and Christmas cards. Most of these letters are dated during Norman’s time in World War II and Korea.

Biographical / Historical

Norman E. Horat was born January 31, 1927, to Clem Horat and Zoe McGee Horat in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He and his mother moved to St. Louis when Norman was a child. In 1944, Norman joined the navy and was stationed at Waldron Training Camp in Farrugut, Idaho, before being stationed on the USS Essex. He married Jackie Clark Horat in 1946. In 1950, Norman was stationed in California and then on the USS Philippine Sea during the Korean War. He died August 14, 1995, in St. Ann, Missouri.

Jackie Clark Horat was born November 8, 1926, to Edward Kennon Clark and Gertrude Marshall Clark in Missouri. She lived with her mother in Elsberry, Missouri, when her mother remarried Ed Black. In her teen years, Jackie stayed with her aunt Laura Marshall Hofer in St Louis, Missouri. Jackie married Norman Horat in 1946. They had four children: Sharon (born in 1947), Susan (born in 1950), Mark (born in 1957), and Steven (born in 1960). Jackie Clark Horat died October 9, 2021, in St. Ann, Missouri.

Zoe McGee Horat Gill was born January 25, 1888, in Kansas to Robert McGee and Jennie McGee. She married Orville Kearby in 1906, and they had one son, Donald Gurnea Kearby, in 1907. In 1925 Zoe remarried Clem Horat, and they had one son, Norman Earl Horat. She and Norman moved to St Louis in the early 1940s. She remarried again in 1947 to Frank M. Gill. They remained married until Frank’s death in 1960 in Murphysboro, Illinois. Zoe Gill died November 27, 1966, in St. Louis, Missouri.

Gertrude Marshall Black was born August 8, 1903, in Missouri to Benjamin Claude Marshall and Lula May Potts. Gertrude married Edward Kennon Clark in Chicago in 1922 and had a daughter, Jackie Clark, in 1926. In February 1936, Gertrude remarried Ed Black, and they had two children, Ed and Mary Lou, and lived in Elsberry, Missouri. Gertrude Black died October 4, 1992, in Bridgeton, Missouri.
