Survey Notebook (Jersey County, Ill.)

 Collection
Identifier: A3278

Scope and Contents

The volume is approximately four inches wide by ten inches tall, and its binding has been repaired using black electrical tape. It bears no page numbers, no date, no title, nor an inscription with the name of its owner. Each page has a heading with the township number and range description with subheadings for the township sections being described. There are no diagrams or narrative notes, only five columns of information identified on the first line of each page: corners, witness trees, [tree] diameter, course, and links [chain]. Only two pages mention a location: the page headed “Part of T.9.N.R.11.West (in Jersey County)” and the last line of the following page for the same area, “not noted being in Greene County Ills.” Therefore, it is deduced that the surveyor worked in Jersey County, Illinois.

Historical Sketch

A surveyor’s field notebook forms the main record of the data gathered in the field. It often contains notes on where data was collected and all pertinent information, measurements, calculations, sketches, and observations made by the surveyor. The owner of this notebook is unknown; however, Jersey County, Illinois, was created in February 1839 from part of Greene County. Two brief statements in the volume also lead to its presumed creation in Jersey County, Illinois.
