Survey Field Notebook (St. Charles County, Mo.)
Scope and Contents
The notebook is a Eugene Dietzgen Co. Engineers’ Field Book containing printed charts and diagrams useful in surveys in addition to lined and graph pages containing field notes by an unidentified surveyor. The notebook pages are numbered. There is a handwritten note on the front cover: “Boonslick Road Survey Notes 1930.” Dates included within the notes for projects in St. Charles County span from May 1930 to September 1937. There are several identified projects in the notebook. However, none of the projects in the notebook are identified as being along Boonslick Road. The only notations that match the cover’s description include drawings of a road and its right of way (p.2-26). In addition to the survey notes, the surveyor also recorded dates, temperature, and weather conditions from May 16 to May 27, 1930. A list of projects for November 1933 (p.158) reveals that there are notes made for the Missouri Point Survey (p.56-108). In this project the surveyor used maps completed by County Surveyor Alfred Riske in 1931. Other project notations in the book include an island in the Missouri River (p.112-117), a survey for Nelson Bradshaw in September 1937 (p.118), a cross section of St. John’s Cemetery in September 1937 (p.120-137), and a cross section of a swimming pool site in October 1936 (p.138-156).

Historical Sketch
A surveyor’s field notebook forms the main record of the data gathered in the field. It contains notes on where data was collected and all pertinent information, measurements, calculations, sketches, and observations made by the surveyor during the course of a survey. The owner of this notebook is unknown. From the brief descriptions and few names listed in the notebook, it was created during surveys conducted in St. Charles County, Missouri. The cover claims to contain notes for a survey conducted on the Boonslick Road in 1930. This was an important road as Missouri’s population grew throughout the 19th century. It began as a Native American trail used by Nathan and Daniel Morgan Boone, Daniel Boone’s sons, when they began extracting and hauling salt from a salt lick they discovered in Howard County. The route became known as the Boone’s Lick Road, or Boonslick Road. Maps show the trail running somewhat parallel with the Missouri River westward from St. Charles to Franklin, Missouri.
