Gustav Frederick Goetsch Art Notes
Scope and Contents
The collection is comprised of ten handwritten pages by artist Gustav F. Goetsch concerning mordant recipes; notes on uses of oils, varnishes, and etching and printing supplies; and color compositions and recommendations. The notes are not dated. All but two small pages are from a notebook with page numbers and include a brief table of contents.

Biographical Sketch
Gustav Fredrick Goetsch was born in Gaylord, Minnesota, on 15 March 1877. He attended the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts for five years, followed by a year at the New York School of Fine Arts, and several years studying art in Europe. Goetsch returned to the Minneapolis Art School as an instructor from 1904 to 1909. From 1909 to 1914, he taught at Washington University’s St. Louis School of Art. Goetsch returned north as the principal of the Fine Arts Department at the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts from 1914 to 1917. In 1917, he settled permanently in St. Louis and returned to the faculty of Washington University’s St. Louis School of Art. Goetsch married Hazel Elizabeth Weedell (1892-1984) on 9 July 1918 in Montana. The couple had two children: Elizabeth Hazel (1924- ) and Gustav Frederick, Jr. (1924- ).
Goetsch was a prolific painter and etcher, his works on display in museums and private collections. Two of his etchings, Minneapolis Street and On The Harlem River, are at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. From 1946 until his retirement in 1952, Goetsch also taught in the Washington University School of Architecture. He died on 4 April 1969 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Kirkwood.
