Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a leather-bound scrapbook embossed with the monogram “MC.” The scrapbook contains signatures, greetings, and drawings from Mary’s classmates and teachers at Soldan, report cards, receipts, passes, and permits, including a permit to play tennis in the public parks for the 1913 season. Also included in the scrapbook are dance cards, score cards, greeting cards, and a half-tone photograph of the Soldan High School Class of January 1914.

Biographical / Historical

Mary V. Callahan was the daughter of Bartholomew and Katherine Murphy Callahan. She attended Benton Public School and was a member of the Soldan High School graduating class of January 1914. Mary played on the basketball team at Soldan and later at Washington University. Mary graduated from Washington University as a teacher, and in the mid-1920s moved to Los Angeles, where she was hired by the School District. Mary married Gerald Palfrey; the couple had no children. She died in Oxnard, California, sometime after 1988.

Loose items placed in an accompanying folder include photographs, programs, calling cards, newspaper clippings, and three felt basketball patches, two from Soldan High School (1911 and 1912) and one from Washington University (1918).

Donor Information

The Mary V. Callahan Scrapbook was donated by Mrs. Patricia Ann Zimmerman, niece of Mary Callahan, on December 2, 1994 (accession number 1994-0500A). The donation also included genealogical material on the Callahan and Urban families.

Separated Materials

Yearbooks from Soldan High School and Washington University were transferred to the Library, and photographs of Mary, Virginia, and Patricia Callahan and Alma Urban were transferred to the Photographs and Prints Department.
