Scope and Contents

The collection contains a typescript copy of a diary of Rev. Charles Peabody, May 21– September 11, 1846; a diary of Rev. Peabody, October 12, 1846–July 25, 1849, while he traveled in the West (mostly in St. Louis, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio) as an agent of the American Tract Society; and four travel diaries of Rev. Peabody, 1858-1859, recording his travels mostly in Europe. The collection also contains correspondence to Rev. Peabody, 1888-1889; many of these letters are from his Dartmouth College classmates.

Biographical Sketch

Charles Peabody, the son of Ammi and Sarah Johnson Peabody, was born November 8, 1816, in Newport, New Hampshire. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1839, and was ordained as a Congregational minister in Boston in 1845. Soon thereafter he traveled to the West as an agent of the American Tract Society. He worked for the American Tract Society in St. Louis in the 1850s-1860s and in Chicago in the 1870s. He married Eliza Antoinette Hubbell in New York in 1847. She died May 28, 1851, in New York. Charles Peabody died November 25, 1903, in Pasadena, California, where he had been residing since the early 1890s.

Donor Information

The papers were donated to the Missouri Historical Society by Charles Peabody’s daughter, Miss S.W. Peabody, in August 1956.
