Scope and Contents

The collection consists of four land deeds. The two earliest deeds date 1831 and 1837 and described land acquired by Nicholas Long. The third is a Sheriff’s Deed in which Elbridge Payne purchased land from a Long family dispute in May 1860. The final item is a deed of trust concerning loans granted to Mary E. Payne by John P. Biographical Sketch

Lawrence Long (1750-1803) and his wife Priscilla (1756-1822) came to Missouri in the late 17th century. They settled in the area now known as Chesterfield. Their youngest sons, James (1789-1872) and Nicholas (1792-1837), also came to Missouri. In 1830, Nicholas married Sallie Post, daughter of John Post and niece of Justus Post.

Nicholas and Sallie Long had four children: Nicholas, Mary Elizabeth Payne (1832-1896), John L., and Clarissa Whitford (1837-1875). Nicholas died in 1837 and was buried in Long Cemetery in Chesterfield. Sallie Post Long married Nicholas’s nephew, Thomas Long, in 1840.

Mary Elizabeth Long married Elbridge G. Payne (1818-1874). The couple traveled often as Payne owned stores in Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1870, Payne built the family a summer house in Bridgeton, where his son William opened a doctor’s office. The Payne-Gentry Historical House is owned by the City of Bridgeton and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
