Scope and Contents

The Thomas S. Hawley Papers consist primarily of correspondence from Thomas Hawley to his parents and siblings in Olney, Illinois, during his Civil War service. The collection also includes several letters from Thomas' parents to their son, and a few letters between other members of the Hawley family. The correspondence documents Thomas Hawley's Civil War service, family affairs, and life in St. Louis after the war. The collection also includes a hospital record book of the 11th Missouri Infantry (Union), kept by Hawley, which contains various lists of patients and wounded men.

Biographical Sketch

Thomas S. Hawley was born February 20, 1837, in Dayton, Ohio, the son of Reverend and Mrs. Nelson J. Hawley. Following his graduation from St. Louis Medical College in 1861, he served in the Civil War as a surgeon with the 111th Illinois Infantry and the 11th Missouri infantry. He married Caroline Joy in 1865 and established a medical practice in St. Louis. Hawley died July 24, 1918, in St. Louis.

Donor Information

The Thomas Hawley Papers were donated to the Missouri Historical Society by Hawley's son, Nelson J. Hawley, in July 1948.
