Circulars Collection
Scope and Contents
The Circulars Collection is an artificial, or subject-based, collection. The documents have been placed in this collection over the years due to their common document type (i.e., circulars). The collection contains a variety of circulars, mostly relating to businesses, politics, events, crime, publishing, military, and the theater. Most of these circulars relate to the St. Louis area.

Arrangement
The collection is arranged chronologically. However, many of the documents are undated. The archivist used sources such as city directories, newspapers, and perpetual calendars to provide dates or approximate dates for these undated documents.

Donor Information
The items in this collection have been acquired by the Missouri Historical Society by donation and purchase from a multiplicity of sources. In cases where accession information is readily available, this information has been noted after the description of the item.

Separated Materials
The following items were removed during processing:
- Circular advertisement of John McAllister and Son, spectacle manufacturers, Philadelphia, [1815]. (Returned to Thomas Jefferson Papers)
- Circular of J.T. Witham & Co., 62 Chestnut Street, St. Louis, including a prospectus of the Free Soil Democrat. Includes an image of The Hermitage, residence of Andrew Jackson, August 30, 1848. (Returned to Political Collection, June 30, 1998)
- Boonville Observer Extra (Boonville, Missouri): “Governor’s Proclamation. To the People of Missouri.” Governor Claiborne F. Jackson’s proclamation calls out the militia of the state into active service “. . . for the purpose of repelling said invasion, and for the protection of our lives . . .” June 12, 1861. [accession number: 59-0030] (Transferred to Civil War Collection, March 3, 2000)
- Recruiting circular for the 33rd Missouri Infantry (Union), issued by Clinton B. Fisk, St. Louis. “Fall in Men! The Merchants’ Regiment! Thirty-Third Missouri Volunteers, United States Service. Head Quarters for Recruiting Service in the Union Merchants’ Exchange Building, . . . St. Louis. . . .” [1862]. [accession number: 62-0099] (Transferred to Civil War Collection, March 3, 2000)
