Scope and Contents
The collection includes letters, postcards, and V-mails from Francis Charles Weidler to his fiancé, Lucille Simons, dated 1942-1945, while he was in the Air Force during World War II. The letters dated 1942-1943 were written while he was in basic training, and the letters dated 1944-1945 were mostly written from France and England and mention D-Day and life back home. Other items include Weidler’s appointment as corporal (temporary) in the 861st School Squadron, October 1, 1942; an issue of the Stars and Stripes newspaper dated February 23, 1944; a program for the USS Enterprise farewell dinner, November 28, 1945; Weidler’s immunization register card, 1942-1945; undated San Angelo Army Air Field Bombardier School booklet; and a September 1942 issue of Magic Chef Magazine, which includes photographs of women working in American Stove Company factories making shells, parachutes, and other material for the war effort.
