The Norman E. Horat Letters consist of letters to and from family members and friends of Norman and Jackie Horat and their mothers, Zoe McGee Horat Gill and Gertrude Marshall Black. Most of the letters were sent during World War II and the Korea War when Norman was in the navy. The letters from Norman Horat to his wife, Jackie, written during his time in the navy from 1944 to 1951, discuss his time in World War II at Camp Waldron in Farragut, Idaho, and at sea. Letters dated 1950-1951 discuss his time stationed in and near Japan during the Korean War. The letters from Jackie to her husband, Norman, dated 1944-1951, relate to her life in high school, life after their marriage, and life with their daughters and family. The letters from Norm Horat’s mother, Zoe, to her son and daughter-in-law are dated 1944 to 1964. These letters contain information regarding Zoe’s life in St. Louis; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her life in Murphysboro, Illinois; and trips to California. The letters from Norman Horat to his mother, Zoe, were written during his time in the navy during World War II and the Korean War. The 1944 letters reference Norman’s time at Camp Waldron in Farragut, Idaho, and on the USS Essex. A few letters were written by Norman as a civilian. The letters dated 1950-1951 contain information about Norman’s time on the USS Philippine Sea and in Japan. The last few letters are written from Jackie Horat to Zoe as they wait for Norman’s discharge from the navy. Letters from Gertrude Black to her daughter Jackie Clark Horat (1941-1978), who lived in St Louis with her aunt Laura Hofer. The letters describe Gertrude’s everyday life in Elsberry, Missouri. A few letters were sent to her from other people and family members. Letters and drawings from Eddie (Pete) and Mary Lou Black to their older sister Jackie Clark Horat, 1940s-1950s. Family letters to and from Jackie’s grandparents Buddy and Lulu Marshall describe everyday life. Letters from various family members related to Jackie Clark Horat and Norman Horat, 1945-2004, include information about the lives of these family members. Letters to Jackie Clark Horat from boyfriends Bill (and his friend Hoff), Lt. Samuel Davis, Lee Remick, and George, 1942-1945, describe their lives in high school and the service. Letters from Jackie’s friends, mostly from her friend Ruth, 1937-2000, describe their personal lives. Letters to Norman Horat from friends, 1944-1996, contain information about the writers’ lives and Christmas cards. Most of these letters are dated during Norman’s time in World War II and Korea.
