Scope and Contents
The Carr-Papin Family Papers consist of records relating mostly to Judge William C. Carr of St. Louis and the allied family lines of Silas Bent and fur trader Joseph Marie Papin. The papers include miscellaneous records related to William C. Carr’s law practice, assorted personal and family records, business records, and land records of several generations of the Carr, Bent, and Papin families. The Walter Carr Papers Series contains papers related to the property and estate of Walter Carr in Fayette County, Kentucky, 1826-1839. The William C. Carr Papers Series contains miscellaneous correspondence, documents, and accounts of William C. Carr, St. Louis, 1807-1849; bills of sale for slaves to Carr, 1805-1833; documents related to the will, death, and estate of Carr, 1849 and 1851; correspondence and legal documents related to cases handled by William C. Carr, attorney, 1793-1808; will of William C. Carr, 1804; bill of sale, 1819; promissory notes, 1793-1812, most likely relating to legal matters handled by Carr as attorney; survey notes, accounts, deed, and correspondence relating to land owned by Carr and William Clark, 1817-1835; documentation relating to Carr’s land claim for property purchased from Samuel Hammond and Pierre Chouteau, [1785-1832]; documentation related to Silas Bent land claim papers, a part of which was ultimately purchased by William C. Carr, [1786]-1846; documents relating to Adams land, possibly relating to legal matter or land claim handled by William C. Carr as attorney, [1796-1812]; and documents related to land grants, sales, and other transactions, possibly related to Carr land claims or related matters handled by William C. Carr, attorney. The Dorcas Bent Carr Papers Series contains accounts, tax records, and an informal will of Dorcas Carr, wife of William C. Carr, 1858; [1865]; no date. The Silas Bent, Jr. Papers Series contains documentation relating to the St. Louis and Tennessee Iron Mining Company, St. Louis County, Mo., incorporated in 1872 by Silas Bent, Jr., Thomas H. Swope, and Horatio D. Wood. The Papin Family Papers Series contains family correspondence, mostly in French, 1826-1846; and documentation relating to Papin family land grants, sales, transactions, and claims, [1776]-1864. The Marie Philippe Leduc Papers Series contains receipts and promissory notes of Marie Philippe Leduc, 1820-1829. The Atchison Family Papers Series contains correspondence, land papers, a bill of sale, and a receipt relating to George W. Atchison and Marie Papin Atchison, 1841-1877; no date. The Charles Bent Carr Papers Series contains a land paper dated 1864. The Lodge/Secret Society Ribbon Series contains a satin ribbon of unknown provenance, likely from a lodge or secret society.
