Biographical Sketch

William Chiles Carr, son of Walter Carr, was born in Albemarle County, Virginia, on April 17, 1783. He arrived in St. Louis in 1804 at the age of 21, and entered into the practice of law. He remained in St. Louis only briefly before moving to Ste. Genevieve, where he lived for a year before returning to St. Louis, which then became his permanent home. In 1826, William C. Carr was appointed judge of the Circuit Court, the jurisdiction of which included several counties besides St. Louis, extending west to the Osage River and south and southwest almost to Arkansas. He resigned his judgeship in 1834, and retired to the private practice of law until his death on March 31, 1851. William C. Carr married Ann Maria Elliott, the daughter of Aaron Elliott of Ste. Genevieve, on November 17, 1807. Together they had three daughters. After Ann’s death, Carr married Dorcas Bent (d. 1887), the daughter of Silas Bent (1786-1827), in December 1829. Their marriage produced nine children, including Charles Bent Carr (b. 1836), who married Louise Atchison, the daughter of Marie Papin and George W. Atchison. In addition to Dorcas, Silas Bent fathered another daughter, Mary Bent, and two sons, William Wells Bent and Silas Bent, Jr. (1820-1887). Joseph Marie Papin was born in Montreal on November 6, 1741, to Joseph and Marguerite Papin. With his family, Papin was one of the earliest settlers in St. Louis, where he engaged in the fur trade. In 1799, he married Marie Louise Chouteau (1762-1817), the daughter of Marie Therese Bourgeois Chouteau and Pierre Laclede, by whom he had seven sons and six daughters. Papin died in 1811. One of Joseph M. Papin’s sons, Pierre Millicour Papin (b. 1793), lived most of his life among the Osage, where he was attached to the agency of the American Fur Company. He died of cholera in 1840. A second son, Hypolite Leber Papin (1787-1842), engaged with a third son, Silvestre Vilray Papin (1794-1828), in the manufacture of Native American trade goods and hardware. A daughter, Marguerite Papin (1781-1808), married Marie Philippe Leduc (1772-1842) in 1802. Another daughter, Marie Louise Papin (b. 1785), married Antoine Roy in 1812 and later Hyacinthe Renard in 1818. Another son, Theodore Dartigny Papin (1799-1849), engaged in the Mexican trade, alternating between Chihuahua and Santa Fe, before retiring to St. Louis to manage the family properties. He married Marie Celeste Duchouquette (d. 1833). Theodore D. Papin’s children included Henri Papin (1827-1872), who married Harriet Wilkinson (1830-1922), and Marie Papin (1822-1901), who married George W. Atchison (1817-1851) in 1839 and later Dr. S. Gratz Moses (b. 1813) after the death of her first husband. Her daughter by her first marriage, Louise Atchison (1840-1915), married Charles Bent Carr (b. 1836), the son of William C. Carr, in 1858, thereby uniting the Carr and Papin families.
