Photocopy of letter signed Lewis C. Patton, Fayette, Mo., to father, Weston, Mo. Although California has no allurements for you and the bright metal itself affords not even a temptation, and that you disapprove my entering such a speculation, yet it is consoling that you have not condemned my alternative. I now say that the object of my choice is not a beauty, but I consider [her] a fine little girl and my junior about eight years. She is Caroline Heywood of Ohio. (acc. no. 70-0017), 1849 Feb 17
