Letter signed Geo. Knox, Collen Grove, [Franklin, Mo.], to [Son] Parker, Fever River, Galena, care of Lane & Knox, St. Louis. Three men came from Santa Fe three days ago. They left the company about 300 miles back and left Santa Fe about 3 days after our boys got there. There were 115 men in the company with about 114 head of stock. Before they got to Simeron Springs, the Indians had taken, at different times, about 700 head from them. What is still worse is one or two days after Daniel Murray and Robt. McNess went ahead in the evening to look for a good camping ground. When they lay down to sleep, the Indians came and killed them both. I suppose when the companies all come in, we will receive some letters from the boys. Those who have come in say they had seen the Whiteman, Hardeman, and our boys, and say those who sold out at Santa Fe got but 20% on cost. A bad prospect. About 5 weeks ago your mother started for Jefferson in a keelboat, became ill, but when she got to Jefferson I went down and brought her and Leona home in a dearborn. A man by the name of Moss wants to rent your farm. I do not [know] what sort of tenant he would make. Rebecca’s mother is going to a weaver next Wednesday with her carpet., 1828 Sept 14
