Letter signed James Noble, St. Louis, to Nehemiah Noble, Bethel, Vt. At present we have few goods and sell little. The Legislature has passed the property or replevin law and now no debt can be collected except in loan office paper which sells special at one half. Mention of this depression and emigrants’ money. I shall in a short time receive advices from Vera Cruz and from the City of Mexico and cannot say how I may be affected by them. I have purchased a bounty tract. Regarding negotiations going on for redemption of some of my land in St. Charles County. The River has been frozen over for 6 or 8 weeks but we have had no sleighing. The collection contains family and business papers, estate papers, passports, and deeds of the families of Lemon Parker, William Russell, and James Russell (St. Louis, Washington County, and Franklin County, Mo.). Included are a travel journal of Lemon Parker, Sr.; land records from Howard County, Mo.; records relating to the firm of Ward & Parker and to the Galena Mining Company; and reminiscences of Anne Clendennin Russell (wife of Silas Bent Russell, son of Russella Russell Parker’s brother Charles Silas Russell) about St. Louis life from 1861-1947, written ca. 1947.
