Letter signed J.D. McIntosh, Lexington, to Miss Maria von Phul, St. Louis. Regarding your attention to my request regarding pictures of mine. I am sorry to learn times are dull in St. Louis. I requested your brother to have them sold for what they will bring as I do not wish the trouble and expense of having them boxed up and returned again. I have talked with Mr. Jouett on the subject of his visiting your town this fall. His improvement has been so wonderful he would now astonish even yourself. He is, if not superior, at least equal to any living artist in the world. (Gift of John Richardson Thomas and Henry von Phul Thomas, January 1954), 1823 July 19
