Biographical Sketch

Johann Wilhelm Von Phul (b. 1739) was born in Westhofen, Germany, and came to America in 1764. He served as a dragoon under General Anthony Wayne in the Pennsylvania militia. He married Katharina Graff (or Graffin) (b. 1757) in 1775 in Lancaster, Pa., and they had eight children: Georg (b. 1776), Katharina (b. 1778), Wilhelm (b. 1780), Sarah (b. 1782), Heinrich (b. 1784), Anna Maria (b. 1786), Philip (b. 1788), and Graff (b. 1790). Anna Maria von Phul (1786-1823) was an artist who used watercolors to paint nature scenes and illustrate Creole life in St. Louis. She was born in Philadelphia and moved with her family to Lexington, Kentucky, in 1800, where she studied with the artists George and Mary Beck. She was encouraged to develop her talent by her friend and neighbor, artist Matthew Jouett. In 1818, she visited her brother Henry in St. Louis, at which point she painted the works in the Missouri Historical Society’s collection. After returning to Kentucky, she settled in St. Louis in 1821 and later died in Edwardsville in 1823. Henry von Phul (1784-1874) was a successful businessman who was born in Philadelphia, lived in Lexington, Kentucky, and later moved to St. Louis when he was about 28 years old. He married Rosalie Genevieve Saugrain (1797-1887), daughter of Antoine Francois Saugrain and Genevieve Rosalie Michau, and they had fifteen children: Rosalie (b. ca. 1815), Willian Henry (1819-1822), George Graff (1820-1822), Anna Maria (b. 1821), Sarah Eliza (b. 1824), Maria Sophie (b. 1826), Julia Louisa (b. 1828), Henry (b. 1830), Theodore Frederick (b. 1833), Francis (1835-1924), Charles (b. 1837), William (1838-1876), Benjamin (1840-ca. 1908), Thomas (1842-1848), and Philip (b. 1844). Throughout his career, Henry von Phul worked in the banking, insurance, and railroad industries. Sarah Von Phul (1782-1867) was born in Philadelphia and married her first husband John Jordan in 1809 in Lexington, Kentucky. After his death in 1813, she married James Mason in 1817 in Edwardsville, Illinois.
