Biographical / Historical

The St. Louis Visitors Center was originally founded in 1963/1964 as the St. Louis Bicentennial Women's Committee, part of the Bicentennial Organization. The group of women were originally a part of the League of Women Voters and decided to donate their time to the Bicentennial Organization. After the celebrations for the bicentennial ended, the committee became the St. Louis Visitors Center, and recieved all of the remaining funds of the organization. Their mission then became "to plan, promote, produce, stage and encourage by advice or assistance educational, cultural, historical or scientific programs through displays, exhibits, lecutres, seminars, tours, or other similar activities or project which ma be arranged for the benefit of the residents and/or visitors in metropolitan St. Louis."

In the following years, the center would host festivals such as Festival St. Louis, Chef's Day, Maifete, and Kiener Plaza Gourmet Treats, and more. They developed many tours for the city and country, doing in depth research on downtown buildings and areas, and looking into many neighborhoods. The center, located at 308 Washington, sold souvenirs, offered brochures, and amassed a collection of information on St. Louis.

The center closed in 2006 after dwindling funds and an aging volunteer base, many of whome began the organization.
