Biographical / Historical
Established as a non-profit organization in 1974, the Normandy Area Historical Association (NAHA) documented, preserved, and interpreted the history of Normandy and its surrounding 20 municipalities in North County for over 30 years. The orginal group that formed NAHA came together to save the historical house owned by Jefferson Kennerly Clark, son of General William Clark, called "Minoma." The group was unsuccessful in saving this home, but they were able to save another historic house, the Hunt House (also known as the Shelter and/or Cenacle, located at 7717 Natural Bridge Road), which became the organization's home for multiple decades. The property on which the house was situated on, originally was the location for Ann Lucas Hunt's first home, known by her as the Shelter. The next house was built by her daughter and husband, Julia Hunt Turner and Henry Smith Turner, known both as the Shelter and Chateau. When that house burned down in the early 1900's, the third house built would be the one saved by NAHA. It would keep the nickname of Shelter and gain a new one, Cenacle, due to its brief inhabitation by the Cenacle Sisters. The "Normandy Area" is defined by the following municipalities: Bellerive Acres, Bel-Nor, Bel-Ridge, Berdell Hills, Beverly Hills, Glen Echo Park, Greendale, Hanley Hills, Hillsdale, Normandy, Northwoods, Norwood Court, Pagedale, Pasadena Hills, Pasadena Park, Pine Lawn, Upland Park, Velda Village, Vinita Park, and Vinita Terrace. These municipalities are located on land formerly owned by the Lucas, Hunt (Lucas-Hunt) and Wilson families. The area recieved its name of Normandy because JBC Lucas (who owned the land) was orginally from Normandy, France.
NAHA became an instrumental force in the Normandy area regarding public programing and historical research. The organization collected, preserved, assisted researchers, published, and undertook historical reasearch projects for the local communities. One of the largest public programming events was the FĂȘte de Normandie celebration, which brought together several organizations in the area to celebrate their French heritage. This was a week long celebration that included street festivities, parades, food, and historical tours of the Normandy area. Due to change in ownership of the Hunt House, NAHA ended up moving their offices to the top floor of St. Vincent's Home on Florissant Road in Normandy. The organization would end up disbanding in 2004, almost 30 years after its formation.
A large portion of their collection was given to the Missouri Historical Society after the Normandy Area Historical Association disbanded. Additional materials concerning the Normandy Area Historical Association, the Normandy schools, and Pasadena Park were donated by Mary Gorman in 2013. Other collection items are held by the Missouri State Archives.Extent
