PENDING Altered book documenting the installation and public reception of Kristen Peterson's show, Visual Delights, at the Sheldon Art Galleries, 2019-2020.
Scope and Contents
This collection contains multiple volumes covering a range of topics and themes. Some take the form of photo diaries with artistic embellishments, in which Peterson documented her work and social life while implementing and experienting with photographic and artistic techniques and mixed media. In the "Mrs. Bailey's House" series, Peterson explores her strong connection with the home of a close neighbor. The bubble wrap evokes the dismantling of the house when it was sold. Peterson's first studio was in her childhood bedroom in the home documented in the "Memories of my Dad's House" series. The "Countryside Lane" volumes document the creation of the studio, where Peterson established her custom of entertaining guests. She continued that tradition in her later studio, where projects, artistic processes and visitors are documented in "Petey's Journals" - told from the viewpoint of her cat. The "Mayors books" series documents Peterson's father, John Peterson, who served as mayor of the city of Frontenac Missouri for eight years. The visitors and individuals documented in the above volumes are indexed by name in this finding aid. (Individuals mentioned in the Mayors Books were indexed if their names appeared more than once or twice.) The Newspaper volumes document Peterson's career in a different form: Peterson's long-running weekly columns in the Suburban Journal as well as other newspapers were bound. These were later digitized and can be searched separately by request to the MHS library staff. Boxes 11 and 12 contain publications, brochures, newsletters and magazines - for corporate and nonprofit clients - containing examples of Peterson's work as a freelance photographer over several decades. They also include the catalog and supplemental documentation of Peterson's one-woman show, "Visual Delights," held at the Sheldon Art Galleries in 2019-2020. The "Orange Book" documents two long running annual lecture series sponsored by Peterson, one at Meramec Community College and one at Saint Louis University.
