Scope and Contents
The Jacob and Lena Mackler Photograph Collection contains 9 photographs showing Jacob and Lena. There are three studio portraits of Lena and three studio portraits of Jacob. Three photos also show Jacob posed on sidewalks: alone, with a group of three unidentified men, and with his son, Boris Mackler.

Biographical / Historical
Jacob H. Mackler and Lena Schwartz Mackler were both of Russian Jewish descent. Jacob was born in 1889 in St. Louis and was the son of Russian immigrants Morris and Ethel Mackler. Lena Schwartz Mackler was born in 1895 in Russia and was the daughter of Simon and Esther Schwartz. She arrived in the United States in 1904 and became a naturalized citizen the same year. She died in 1971.
After obtaining his law degree, Jacob worked as a defense attorney. His clients included members of the Hogan gang, and due to this work, he became involved in the conflict between the Hogan gang and the Egan’s Rats gang. He was murdered by members of Egan’s Rats on February 21, 1923.
