Biographical / Historical
Hamiet Bluiett (1940-2018) was a jazz saxophonist born in St. Louis who moved during his childhood to nearby Brooklyn, Illinois, the first town in US incorporated by African Americans. Bluiett learned how to play several musical instruments including the piano and clarinet before focusing on the baritone saxophone. He returned to St. Louis in 1966 and was a co-founder of the Black Artists Group (BAG). In 1969 he moved to New York where he played with several groups before becoming a bandleader himself and a member of the World Saxophone Quartet, recording nearly 50 albums. In 2002 he returned to Brooklyn, Illinois to be closer to family. There he taught lessons and worked with young musicians.
