Scope and Contents

The Kris Kleindienst Photograph Collection contains photographs documenting her involvement with Team St. Louis and her participation in the 1990 Gay Games in Vancouver and the 1994 Gay Games in New York City. Photographs show group portraits of Team St. Louis members, including the Arch Rivals softball team; Kleindienst receiving a gold medal; Kleindienst posing with other athletes; and a concession stand run by Team St. Louis during 1990 Pride festivities as a fundraiser.

Biographical / Historical

Kris Kleindienst has been an activist for feminist and lesbian rights in St. Louis for most of her life. She participated in the Gay Games, an Olympics-style competition, in 1982, 1986, 1990, and 1994 and medaled in several events. About 1990, she became a founding member of Team St. Louis. Kleindienst has also been a co-owner of Left Banks Books for over four decades, as of 2023.

Team St. Louis was founded to educate and promote general health in the LGBT community of St. Louis through participation in sports. It later expanded to serve the straight community as well. Members of the organization compete in various sports including cycling, soccer, ballroom dance, tennis, rugby, volleyball, softball, running, bowling, rock climbing, darts, fencing, flag football and roller derby. Competitions take place at the local, national, and international level. Team St. Louis has had competitors at the Gay Games, World OutGames, and the Continental OutGames.
