Biographical / Historical
Thomas P. Hannegan (May 16, 1970-October 20, 2021) was a businessman, realtor, publisher, and politician from St. Charles, Missouri. He worked for the family-owned Hannegan Real Estate and Construction Company, and he launched and ran StreetScape, a "community interest" magazine focused on St. Charles and nearby areas.
Hannegan first began to acknowledge his sexual orientation publicly in about 2013, when he began dating his partner, Scott Mell.
In 2016, Hannegan became the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected as a Republican to the Missouri state legislature. (Several openly LGBTQ+ Democrats had been elected earlier. In 2012, a Republican, Zachary Wyatt, came out as gay after being elected to office.) Hannegan was reelected twice. While a Republican of a generally conservative outlook (e.g., being opposed to abortion rights), he was a strong supporter of anti-discrimination legislation inclusive of gender identity and sexual orientation.
Hannegan died suddenly of a stroke in October 2021. He was survived by his partner, Scott Mell, the donor.
