St. Louis LGBT History Project Photograph Collection
Scope and Contents
The St. Louis LGBT History Project Photograph Collection contains posters and photographs documenting the St. Louis LGBTQIA+ community from about the 1970s through 2013. Materials were collected by community historian Steven Brawley, founder of the St. Louis LGBT History Project. The collection covers a wide variety of topics, including headshots of drag queens and other performers; Pride festivals and parades; and posters advertising events sponsored by the Privacy Rights Education Project (PREP). Performers shown include Beverly Hills, Jade Esteban Estrada, Carmella Marcella Garcia, Tasha Kohl, Edye Gregory, Erica Foxx, Tera Rene, and Shayla Simpson. PREP events include proms and other dances, as well as a counter-protest against a Westboro Baptist Church picket during Governor Mel Carnahan's funeral.
The collection also includes AIDS awareness posters; prints of drawings done by Ron Gomez for Clementines bar; photographs of transgender activist Robyn Carolyn Montague; and photographs and posters documenting Soulard Mardi Gras parade floats and masquerade balls sponsored by the Krewe of Louie, including their first-place float from the 2000 parade. Also of note are two photographs of the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights and material related to campaigns protesting Proposition 8 in California and Amendment 2 in Missouri. Proposition 8 banned same-sex marriage in California in 2008, while Amendment 2 in 2004 defined marriage in Missouri as the union of one man and one woman.
