Susan Block Poster Collection

Scope and Contents

The Susan Block Poster Collection contains two posters documenting LGBTQIA+ community events.

One poster commemorates the June 2010 production of "The State of Marriage," written and directed by Joan Lipkin in collaboration with JT Ricroft. It offered a theatrical exploration of the issue of same-sex marriage, presented from a local perspective and incorporating thinly fictionalized stories of actual St. Louisans. Most notably, the play centered on the "Marriage Bus" that brought Missouri same-sex couples to Iowa to be wed after that state legalized same-sex marriage in April 2009. The poster features the names and roles of the cast and crew, as well as a montage of approximately twenty-three color photographs from the show. Susan E. Block, the donor, was credited as "dramaturg" and assisted in a variety of capacities with the production of "The State of Marriage." According to Block, Lipkin had this poster specially made and gave it to Block as a keepsake in appreciation of her contributions to "The State of Marriage."

The second poster was displayed at a February 2006 reception for Lawyers for Equality, an organization for LGBTQIA+ legal professionals and their supporters in the St. Louis area. The poster features the slogan "Missouri's First LGBT Law Association" and names the evening's speaker, Michael Wolff, at the time chief justice of the Missouri Supreme Court. It also features a photograph of the St. Louis skyline and the names and logos of law firms that sponsored Lawyers for Equality. Block was a co-founder of Lawyers for Equality, along with Mike Colona and Jason Hall. Lawyers for Equality put on educational and social events.
